If you are skeptical about meditation, I have a book recommendation for you. 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works by Dan Harris is an entertaining and informative read for meditation skeptics. I counted myself among the curious-but-skeptical crowd when I first read this book. I have come a long way since that time.
10% Happier is a memoir that describes Dan’s reluctant embrace of meditation after a drug problem, an on-air freak-out on Nightline, and an unplanned spiritual journey that included conversations with brain scientists and spiritual gurus. Through his extensive research, Dan suggests that practicing meditation and mindfulness will make you at least 10 percent happier. Being mindful doesn’t change the problems in your life, but mindfulness does help you respond to your problems rather than react to them. Mindfulness helps you realize that striving for success is fine as long as you accept that the outcome is outside your control.
